What are SMD tantalum capacitors?

An SMD tantalum capacitor is a type of tantalum capacitor that has contact surfaces on both sides of a case for surface-mounting on a printed circuit board. It is also called a tantalum chip capacitor. SMD tantalum capacitors have different termination styles, such as J-lead, TACmicrochip, undertab/facedown, and conformal. SMD tantalum capacitors are the most common type of tantalum capacitors and are used for applications such as power supply filtering, audio and video equipment, portable devices, and automotive electronics. Kyocera's AVX TAJ series capacitors are general purpose, standard polarized tantalum chip capacitors. The capacitance value ranges from 0.10µF to 2200µF.

The T491 standard terminations are available in 100% matte tin and provide excellent wetting characteristics and compatibility with today's surface mount solder systems. The Vishay TANTAMOUNT 293D series are standard industrial grade solid tantalum chip capacitors. The capacitance value ranges from 0.1µF to 1000µF. Tantalum capacitors are the preferred choice in applications where volumetric efficiency, stable electrical parameters, high reliability and long service life are primary considerations. The devices are available in ±5%, ±10% and ±20% tolerance, and an operating temperature range of 55°C to +125°C. They are compatible with high volume automatic pick and place equipment. They meet IEC specification QC300801/US0001 and EIA535BAAC mechanical and performance requirements, and have been 100% surge current tested (D and E sizes). Applications include Industrial, Consumer Electronics, Portable Devices, and Power Management.
