Single Pair Ethernet is the future for high speed data communication. By using just two single wires, data rates of 1000 MBit/s are possible. The new standard IEEE802.3cg allows data connections of 10 MBit/s with over 1000 meters cable reach and a direct connection from field level to the cloud. This enables many new use cases like smart sensors and can replace current field bus systems. As compared to Standard Ethernet, the connectors, cable diameters, and filter circuit are much smaller, which allows for more compact applications.
In today's world, wireless connectivity is a common term. A wireless network allows devices to stay connected to the network, roaming untethered to any wires. IoT, IIoT, Industry 4.0 and digitalization are areas in which data exchange takes place in a network to enable cooperation between physical or digital objects. This exchange is based on sensors which collect the data and radio modules which send the data. The most dominant interface in factory, process, and building automation today is Ethernet. With a data rate of up to 10 GBit and a cable reach of 100 meters, Ethernet can be found everywhere data is transferred over a certain distance. Further advantage: Ethernet is using the TCP/IP protocol, so that direct connections from field level to the cloud can be realized.
USB 3.x is the updated version of the familiar USB standard. Through additional LVDS high-speed wire pairs the transmission speed is significantly increased to up to 20 Gbit/s. Thanks to this fact high-resolution video interfaces can now also be implemented with the universal serial bus, among other high-speed applications. Since higher currents are specified, USB 3.x can also be used as a connection to the power supply. The USB C standard brings a rotationally symmetrical connector and further advantages.
The USB interface is probably the most widespread interface in the world, both in domestic and industrial environments. The USB 2.0 standard is a serial bus system with a maximum data rate of 480 Mbit/s. Despite its widespread use, there are some points to consider when designing the application in order to achieve an EMC-compliant interface. Using suitable TVS diodes and current-compensated common-mode chokes for data lines, effective concepts can be developed to obtain non-critical circuits.
The RS485 interface (Recommended Standard 485) is used for data communication over long distances. Data is transmitted bidirectionally via a pair of wires at a data rate of up to 12 Mbps. The symmetrical line increases the electromagnetic interference immunity. Since the protocol is not standardized, implementations of different manufacturers are rarely compatible with each other. RS422 differs essentially in the use of 2 pairs of wires, each of which is used unidirectionally. Mostly 9-pole D-Sub variants are used as connectors.
